No seas una desgracia a la gracia (Do not be a disgrace to grace)

Hay dos formas equivocadas de responder a la gracia de Dios. Por un lado están los que no aceptan Su gracia y siguen dependiendo de sus "buenas obras" y de su capacidad de cumplir la ley para ganarse el cielo. Por otro lado están los que abusan de la gracia de Dios dedicándose a una vida de pecado y placeres mundanos basados en la verdad de que Cristo ya pagó y da igual ser bueno que malo; de ahí el refrán popular “por cuanto al cielo vamos, bebamos”. Los primeros no han entendido que Cristo pagó por nuestros pecados y nos abrió las puertas del cielo; los segundos ignoran que la gracia nos habilita para hacer buenas obras y vivir una vida que agrade siempre a Dios.

Efesios 2:10 (RVR 1960)

Porque somos hechura suya, creados en Cristo Jesús para buenas obras, las cuales Dios preparó de antemano para que anduviésemos en ellas.

La buenas obras no son un requisito para ser salvo, sino que son una demostración de que somos salvos. Cuando recibimos a Cristo, la Biblia dice que somos hechos de nuevo. En Cristo hemos sido creados para buenas obras, las cuales fueron preparadas con anterioridad por Dios para que caminemos en ellas. El hombre sin Cristo no puede caminar rectamente; solamente por su gracia podemos hacer lo bueno. Estas buenas obras no son una condición, sino el resultado de acercarnos a Dios. El orden es el siguiente: nacemos en pecado, es decir, separados de Dios; por nuestra fe en Jesucristo somos salvos y podemos tener comunión con Dios; como consecuencia de nuestra reconciliación con Dios, nos alejamos del pecado y empezamos a hacer lo que es correcto. ¡Cuando eres salvo, se te debe notar que lo eres!

2 Corintios 5:17 (RVR 1960)

De modo que si alguno está en Cristo, nueva criatura es; las cosas viejas pasaron; he aquí todas son hechas nuevas.

La evidencia de que una persona está verdaderamente en Cristo, es decir, que cree en Jesús y vive una vida de la mano de Él, es que en ella se manifiesta una nueva vida. Cuando conocemos a Cristo, nuestra vida empieza a cambiar. Esto no quiere decir que de la noche a la mañana seamos completamente nuevos, sino que empezamos a dejar atrás las cosas que Él necesita renovar; nuestros pensamientos y nuestras acciones. Cuando estamos en Cristo, nuestras buenas decisiones nos llevarán a un buen destino. Un cristiano (creyente y discípulo de Cristo) que no vive de acuerdo con las enseñanzas de Jesús, es una desgracia a la gracia.

Tito 2:11-12 (RVR 1960)

Porque la gracia de Dios se ha manifestado para salvación a todos los hombres, enseñándonos que, renunciando a la impiedad y a los deseos mundanos, vivamos en este siglo sobria, justa y piadosamente.

La gracia de Dios ha sido revelada por medio de Jesucristo a toda la humanidad. Cuando aceptamos a Cristo y recibimos Su gracia, el Espíritu Santo nos enseña a llevar una nueva vida. La gente muchas veces pregunta ¿Cómo hago para cambiar? La respuesta es sencilla: deja que la gracia de Dios te enseñe (por medio del Espíritu Santo) a llevar la nueva vida que Dios ha preparado para ti. Solamente podremos vivir una vida sobria, justa y piadosa si permitimos que la gracia de Dios nos enseñe, nos capacite y nos habilite para vivirla. No podemos recibir la gracia de Dios por méritos personales, solamente debemos aceptarla y permitir que ella obre en nosotros y nos ayude a ser verdaderos cristianos.

Do not be a disgrace to grace

There are two wrong ways to respond to God's grace. On one side we have those who do not accept His grace and remain dependent on their "good works" and their ability to fulfill the law to obtain access to heaven. On the other side there are those who abuse God’s grace and live dedicated to a life of sin and worldly pleasures based on the truth that Christ has already paid and it doesn’t matter if you are good or bad; hence the popular saying "since we are going to heaven, let us enjoy". Some people haven’t understood that Christ paid for our sins and opened the gates of heaven; others ignore that grace enables us to do good works and live a life that always pleases God.

Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Works are not required for salvation; they are a fruit of being saved. When we receive Christ, the Bible says we are born again. In Christ we are created for good works which were prepared in advance by God for us to walk in them. The man without Christ cannot walk straight; only by His grace we can act correctly. These good works are not a condition, but the result of approaching God with faith. The order is as follows: we are born in sin, this means, separated from God; by our faith in Jesus Christ we are saved and we can have fellowship with God; as a result of our reconciliation with God, we turn away from sin and started doing what is right. When you are saved, others will notice that you are!

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

The evidence that a person is truly in Christ, and that believes in Jesus and lives guided by Him, is that in this person a new life is manifested. When we know Christ, our life begins to change. This does not mean that overnight we will be completely new, but we begin to leave behind the things he needs to renew; our thoughts and our actions. When we are in Christ, our good decisions lead us to a good destination. A Christian (believer and follower of Christ) who does not live according to the teachings of Jesus, is a disgrace to grace.

Titus 2:11-12 (NKJV)

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.

The grace of God has been revealed by Jesus Christ to all mankind. When we accept Christ and receive His grace, the Holy Spirit teaches us to live a new life. People often ask: how do I change? The answer is simple: let the grace of God teach you (through the Holy Spirit) to live the new life that God has prepared for you. We can only live sober, upright and godly lives if we allow God's grace to teach us, empower us and enable us to live. We cannot receive the grace of God through personal merits, but we must accept it and let it work in us and help us be true Christians.
