Por esta razón también, obrando con toda diligencia, añadid a vuestra fe, virtud, y a la virtud, conocimiento.

En el versículo de hoy, el apóstol Pedro nos llama a añadirle virtud y conocimiento a la fe. Algunos dicen que creer con fe es creer a ciegas; pero realmente estamos llamados a conocer nuestra fe. La Biblia abunda en información que nos ayuda a entender la fe que decimos profesar.

Cuando se trata del conocimiento y la fundamentación en la palabra de Dios, hay dos grupos de personas y cada grupo se divide en tres combinaciones.

• Los que saben poca Biblia y no la creen.

• Los que saben poca Biblia, creen lo que saben, pero no lo aplican.

• Los que saben poca Biblia y viven lo poco que saben.

• Los que saben mucha Biblia pero no la creen.

• Los que saben mucha Biblia, la creen, pero no la aplican.

• Los que saben mucha Biblia, la creen, y la viven.

Una de mis frases favoritas dice así: “No se trata de cuánta Biblia sabes, sino de cuánta Biblia pueden leer los demás en ti”.

Muchos hoy día no están interesados en ampliar su conocimiento de la palabra; se conforman con sentarse en una silla cada domingo y escuchar un fragmento de la verdad transformadora que se esconde en la palabra de Dios. A algunos líderes religiosos les conviene tener este tipo de personas, ya que éstas son altamente manipulables y es fácil engañarlas. Son en gran medida la masa que hoy llena las iglesias sin saber si lo que les predican es verdad. Pablo advirtió acerca de lo que sucede con aquellos que desconocen el evangelio de Jesucristo.

Efesios 4:14 (NTV)

Entonces ya no seremos inmaduros como los niños. No seremos arrastrados de un lado a otro ni empujados por cualquier corriente de nuevas enseñanzas. No nos dejaremos llevar por personas que intenten engañarnos con mentiras tan hábiles que parezcan la verdad.

Muchos otros, están interesados en adquirir conocimiento pero no lo aplican. Esto no tiene sentido; de nada sirve el conocimiento cuando éste no se hace vida en la persona que lo tiene. La gente quiere estudiar teología cuando ni siquiera aplica el más sencillo pero profundo mandamiento dado por Jesús: amar a Dios y al prójimo. El problema de estas personas es que su conocimiento produce muerte en lugar de producir vida; porque la letra mata, mas el Espíritu vivifica (2 Corintios 3:6), y la fe sin obras es muerta (Santiago 2:17).

Esto no implica que podemos dejarle la tarea de estudiar y capacitarse solo a los pastores o sacerdotes. La Biblia es muy clara acerca de esto, y yo creo firmemente en que todo cristiano (creyente en Cristo) tiene la obligación de capacitarse, estudiar y conocer a fondo su fe para tener una mejor relación con Dios y con la sociedad. En otras palabras, creemos por fe pero fortalecemos la fe con el conocimiento de la Palabra. La fe viene por oír la palabra de Dios (Romanos 10:17). Sin embargo, este conocimiento debe verse reflejado en nuestra vida diaria.

Otra buena razón para seguir estudiando y conociendo la palabra de Dios, es que todo creyente debe estar bien fundamentado para poder defender su fe.

Sino santificad a Dios el Señor en vuestros corazones, y estad siempre preparados para presentar defensa con mansedumbre y reverencia ante todo el que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros.

El Blog de FE es una herramienta de formación para todo aquel que lo lee. Los mensajes son cortos y concretos, pero profundos a la vez. Mi visión es enseñar la verdad de la palabra de Dios sin manipulación ni dobles intenciones. El único fin, es el de “perfeccionar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo, hasta que todos lleguemos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a un varón perfecto, a la medida de la estatura de la plenitud de Cristo” (Efesios 4:12-13).

Know your faith

But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge.

In today's verse, the apostle Peter calls us to add virtue and knowledge to our faith. Some say that to believe by faith is to believe blindly; but we're called to know our faith. The Bible abounds with information that helps us understand the faith we profess.

When it comes to the knowledge and foundation in the word of God, there are two groups of people and each group is divided into three combinations.

• Those who don’t know much about the Bible; and don’t believe it.

• Those who don’t know much about the Bible; believe what they know but do not apply it.

• Those who don’t know much about the Bible; but apply as little as they know.

• Those who know a lot about the Bible; but don’t believe it.

• Those who know a lot about the Bible; believe it, but don’t apply it.

• Those who know a lot about the Bible; believe it, and live according to it.

One of my favorite quotes says: "It's not about how much Bible you know; it's about how much Bible others can read in you".

Many today are not interested in expanding their knowledge of the word; they are happy to sit on a chair every Sunday and listen to an excerpt from the transforming truth that is hidden in the word of God. This suits some religious leaders very well, because these people are very easily manipulated and deceived. They are the majority that fills up the churches today; not knowing if what is being preached is true. Paul warned about what happens to those who don't know the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 4:14 (NLT)

Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

Many others, are interested in acquiring knowledge that they don't apply. This makes no sense; knowledge is useless when it doesn't produce life in the person who has it. People want to study theology while they don’t even apply the simple but profound commandment given by Jesus: love God and love your neighbor. The problem with these people is that their knowledge brings death instead of producing life; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life (2 Corinthians 3:6), and faith without works is dead (James 2:17).

This doesn't mean we must leave the task of studying the word just to pastors or priests. The Bible is very clear about this fact; I firmly believe that every Christian (believer in Christ) is required to read, study and get to deeply know his faith in order to have a better relationship with God and with society. In other words, we believe by faith but strengthen our faith through the knowledge of the Word. Faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). However, this knowledge must be reflected in our daily lives.

Another good reason to keep studying and knowing the word of God is that every believer should be well informed in order to defend his faith.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.

"The Blog of FAITH" is an equipping tool for anyone who reads it. The messages are short and concrete, but deep. My vision is to teach the truth found in God’s word without manipulation or hidden intentions. The only purpose is to “equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12-13).
