Ley & Gracia (Law & Grace)

Más que controversia, hoy pretendo traer luz sobre este importante tema de "Ley & Gracia". Por ser este un asunto tan importante, TODO creyente tiene la obligación de estudiarlo, masticarlo y pedirle a Dios que le revele y responda sus dudas con base en Su palabra.

Juan 1:17 (RVR 1960)

Pues la ley por medio de Moisés fue dada, pero la gracia y la verdad vinieron por medio de Jesucristo.

El "pero" en el verso anterior demuestra una importante verdad: la ley y la gracia son conceptos diferentes. Si el pasaje anterior nos dijera: "la ley vino por medio de Moisés, y la gracia y la verdad por Jesucristo", podríamos decir que son un mismo evangelio. El "pero" demuestra una idea contraria. No podemos decir, "Camilo es muy inteligente, pero saca buenas notas".

El propósito de la ley nunca fue acercarnos a Dios sino demostrarnos cuán lejos realmente estamos de Él. A diferencia de lo que la religión y la tradición enseñan, debemos entender que cumplir la ley no nos acerca más a Dios; por el contrario nos aleja. La ley rompe con el orgullo del hombre y le demuestra que no puede en sus capacidades ser santo delante de Dios.

Romanos 3:19-20 (NTV)

Obviamente, la ley se aplica a quienes fue entregada, porque su propósito es evitar que la gente tenga excusas y demostrar que todo el mundo es culpable delante de Dios. Pues nadie llegará jamás a ser justo ante Dios por hacer lo que la ley manda. La ley sencillamente nos muestra lo pecadores que somos.

El problema de querer vivir una vida bajo la ley con el fin de agradar a Dios, es que ese estilo de vida se enfoca en nosotros y en nuestra capacidad de hacer lo bueno. La gracia por otra parte se enfoca en Jesucristo, en su obra consumada en la cruz y en su obra progresiva en la vida del creyente.

La Biblia dice en el libro de Colosenses 1:16, que "todas las cosas fueron creadas por Jesús y para Jesús". La ley no nos enseña a depender de Jesús sino a depender de nuestras capacidades y habilidades. Esto para Dios es abandonar el evangelio de Jesucristo.

Gálatas 5:4 (NTV)

Pues, si ustedes pretenden hacerse justos ante Dios por cumplir la ley, ¡han quedado separados de Cristo! Han caído de la gracia de Dios.

Todo esfuerzo humano por cumplir la ley o las instrucciones dadas por Dios es vano. El hombre no tiene la capacidad de hacerlo en sus fuerzas y es por esto que la ley aleja al hombre de Dios. La palabra gracia, según el diccionario bíblico Strong's, viene del griego Jarís y su significado es “específicamente la influencia divina sobre el corazón, y su reflejo en la vida”.

En otras palabras, la gracia nos habilita y empodera para poder vivir una vida por encima de lo ordinario. Una vida alineada a la voluntad de Dios y que agrade a Dios en todo momento.

No tiene ningún sentido para una persona, vivir una vida de ritos, tradiciones, fiestas, prohibiciones y reglas; cuando su vida interior está mal, su matrimonio es un desastre, su vida personal está desordenada, sus hijos no están en sujeción y difícilmente es ejemplo y testimonio a los que lo rodean.

La gracia de Dios nos enseña a vivir una vida que produzca buenas obras alineadas con la voluntad de Dios como fruto del Espíritu (Gálatas 5). El cumplimiento de los principios y las instrucciones dadas por Dios es una consecuencia de habernos acercado a Él por medio de Jesús tal cual somos; y haber sido transformados por su amor. Cualquier iniciativa personal por cumplir leyes en nuestras fuerzas nos aparta de Jesús; nunca nos acerca.

Se trata de Jesús.

Law & Grace

More than controversy, today I intend to bring light on this important subject of "Law & Grace." Because this is such an important matter, every believer is obliged to study it, meditate on it and ask God to reveal and answer his questions based on Scripture.

John 1:17 (NKJV)

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

The word "but" demonstrates an important truth: law and grace are different concepts. If the verse said: "the law was given through Moses, and grace and truth came through Jesus Christ", we could interpret that both (law & grace) are the same gospel. The word "but" talks about an idea that is contrary. We cannot say, "Camilo is very intelligent, but gets good grades".

The purpose of the law was never to bring us closer to God, but actually to show us how far away we really are from Him. Unlike what religion and tradition teach, we must understand that fulfilling the law does not bring us closer to God; on the contrary it turns us away from Him. The law stops us from bragging about how good we are, and shows us that in our own strengths and capabilities we cannot be holy before God.

Romans 3:19-20 (NLT)

Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.

The problem of wanting to live a life under the law in order to please God, is that this lifestyle is focused on us and on our ability to do good. Grace on the other hand focuses on Jesus Christ, in His finished work on the cross and in his progressive work in the believer's life.

The Bible says in the book of Colossians 1:16, that "all things were created by Jesus and for Jesus." The law does not teach us to depend on Jesus but to rely on our skills and abilities. God sees this as if we were abandoning the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Galatians 5:4 (NLT)

For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.

Every human effort to fulfill the law or comply with the instructions given by God is futile. Man does not have the ability to do it in his strengths; that is why the law alienates man from God. The word grace, according to Strong's Bible Dictionary, comes from the Greek charis and its meaning is "specifically the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life".

In other words, grace enables and empowers us to live a life above the ordinary. A life aligned with God's will and pleasing to God at all times.

It makes no sense for a person to live a life of rituals, traditions, festivals, prohibitions and rules; when his inner life is wrong, his marriage is a disaster, his personal life is a mess, his children are not under authority, and he is hardly an example and witness to those that surround him.

God's grace teaches us to live a life that produces good deeds aligned with the will of God as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5). Complying with the principles and instructions given by God is a consequence of approaching Him as sinners through Jesus; then we are transformed by his love. Any personal initiative to comply with the law in our own strengths keeps us away from Jesus; it never brings us closer to Him.

It's all about Jesus.
