La madurez espiritual: Jesucristo nuestro modelo a seguir (Spiritual maturity: Jesus our role model)

Toda persona durante su ciclo de vida natural, después de que nace inicia un proceso de crecimiento donde se hace niño, adolecente, joven, adulto, y anciano; en lo espiritual sucede igual. La Biblia enseña que la consecuencia del pecado de Adán y Eva fue la muerte. Pero no muerte física, sino muerte espiritual (separación de Dios). Es por esto que todos los seres humanos nacemos muertos en el espíritu y es solamente cuando recibimos a Cristo en nuestro corazón y lo aceptamos como Señor y Salvador personal que volvemos a nacer. Esto es lo que la Biblia llama el nuevo nacimiento (Juan 3).

Muchos cristianos nacen de nuevo pero nunca se preocupan por crecer y madurar espiritualmente, sino que continúan viviendo la misma vida que traían antes de conocer a Jesús. La Biblia nos enseña en 1 Pedro 2:9, que los que creemos en Jesús, hemos sido trasladados de las tinieblas a luz. El problema es que muchos se devuelven a las tinieblas descuidando su condición espiritual.

Lo natural es que una persona se desarrolle, madure y crezca espiritualmente después de nacer de nuevo.

El autor del libro de Hebreos lo pone de esta manera:

Hebreos 5:12 (NTV)

Hace tanto que son creyentes que ya deberían estar enseñando a otros. En cambio, necesitan que alguien vuelva a enseñarles las cosas básicas de la palabra de Dios. Son como niños pequeños que necesitan leche y no pueden comer alimento sólido.

Es interesante ver que el autor está exhortando a los creyentes y los confronta porque llevan mucho tiempo en la fe pero siguen siendo niños pequeños espiritualmente hablando. Esto demuestra que la madurez no tiene nada que ver con el tiempo que se lleva en la fe, sino con el compromiso personal de cada uno de crecer, por eso vemos "cristianos" de más de 20 años pero que reflejan en sus vidas todo menos a la persona de Cristo.

1 Corintios 3:1-3 (NTV)

Amados hermanos, cuando estuve con ustedes, no pude hablarles como lo haría con personas espirituales. Tuve que hablarles como si pertenecieran a este mundo o como si fueran niños en Cristo. Tuve que alimentarlos con leche, no con alimento sólido, porque no estaban preparados para algo más sustancioso. Y aún no están preparados, porque todavía están bajo el control de su naturaleza pecaminosa. Tienen celos unos de otros y se pelean entre sí. ¿Acaso eso no demuestra que los controla su naturaleza pecaminosa? ¿No viven como la gente del mundo?

Pablo escribe estas fuertes palabras a la iglesia de Corinto revelando que el inmaduro espiritual es aquel que se comporta como si perteneciera al mundo. Hoy muchas personas predican diciendo que por la gracia de Dios podemos hacer lo que queramos y comportarnos como queramos. La realidad es que la gracia es mucho más que perdón de pecados y amor inmerecido. La gracia es el poder de Dios derramado sobre la vida del creyente para que éste pueda vivir una vida que agrade a Dios.

Los seres humanos somos replicantes. Todos tendemos a imitar conductas y actitudes de nuestros modelos. El peligro de esto está en establecer modelos negativos. Por ejemplo, para una persona que no lee la Biblia pero dice ser cristiana, su modelo generalmente es su pastor y su líder. Esto no es malo, excepto cuando el líder o el pastor tampoco tienen como modelo a Jesús sino que imitan a otro hombre. La única manera de estar seguros de que estamos imitando a alguien con la "estatura" de Cristo, es leyendo las escrituras y teniendo una relación personal con Jesús. Nuestro modelo a seguir debe ser Jesucristo, no un hombre imperfecto. Por eso Pablo decía "Sed imitadores de mí, así como yo de Cristo" (1 Corintios 11:1). En ese tiempo, los creyentes no contaban con el canon neo testamentario como nosotros lo conocemos. Recién en esas cartas se estaba construyendo el Nuevo Testamento. Por ello, la iglesia debía imitar a los hombres que tenían la revelación de la verdad. Pero hoy, tú y yo tenemos la Biblia para estudiarla y al Espíritu Santo para que nos enseñe por medio de su gracia, a vivir una vida cristiana victoriosa.

Medita en esto:

¿Conoces a Jesús? ¿Hace cuanto tiempo conoces a Jesús? ¿Has establecido una relación personal con Jesús? ¿Te consideras un niño, joven o anciano espiritual? ¿Eres aun niño debiendo ser ya joven o anciano espiritual?

Jesus our role model

Everyone during his natural life cycle, after birth initiates a process of growth; first a child, and then, teenager, young adult and elder. The same thing happens spiritually speaking. The Bible teaches that the consequence of the sin of Adam and Eve was death. But not physical death, but spiritual death (separation from God). This is why human beings are born spiritually dead, and it is only when we receive Christ into our hearts and we accept Him as Lord and Savior that we are born again. This is what the Bible calls the new birth (John 3).

Many Christians are born again but never care about growing and maturing spiritually, but they continue to live the same life they had before meeting Jesus. The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 2:9, that those who believe in Jesus have been transferred from darkness to light. The problem is that many return to darkness neglecting their spiritual condition.

It is natural for a person to develop, mature and grow spiritually after being born again.

The author of Hebrews puts it this way:

You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food.

It is interesting that the author is exhorting the believers and confronts them because they have been believers long ago but still are small spiritual children. This shows that maturity has nothing to do with the time you have in your faith, but with the personal commitment of each one to grow, this is why we see people that have been "Christians" for over 20 years, but they reflect on their lives anything but the person of Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:1-3 (NLT)

Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world?

Paul writes these strong words to the church at Corinth revealing that a spiritually immature person is one that behaves as if he belonged to the world. Today many people preach saying that by the grace of God we can do what we please and can behave like we want. The reality is that grace is much more than forgiveness of sins and undeserved love. Grace is the power of God poured out upon the believer's life so that he can live a life that pleases God.

Humans are replicating. We all tend to imitate behaviors and attitudes of our models. The danger of this is to establish negative models. For example, for a person who does not read the Bible but claims to be Christian, his model is usually a pastor or leader. This is not bad, except when the leader or pastor doesn't have Jesus as their role model, but have another man instead. The only way to be sure that we are imitating someone with the "stature" of Christ is by reading the scriptures and having a personal relationship with Jesus. Our role model should be Jesus Christ, not an imperfect man. Paul said, "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ" (1 Corinthians 11:1). At that time, the believers didn't have the neo-testamentary canon as we know it today. Through those letters the New Testament was being built. Therefore, the church was called to imitate the men who had the revelation of truth. But today, you and I have the Bible so we can grow, and the Holy Spirit who teaches us through his grace to live a victorious Christian life.

Meditate on this:

Do you know Jesus? How long have you know Jesus? Have you established a personal relationship with Jesus? Do you consider yourself a child, youngster or elder? Are you still child when you ought to be a youngster or an elder?
