Ángeles Parte II (Angels Part II)

Los ángeles son seres gloriosos y majestuosos. Por eso la tendencia natural, pero equivocada, del hombre ha sido adorarlos.

Apocalipsis 10:1 (RVR 1960)

Vi descender del cielo a otro ángel fuerte, envuelto en una nube, con el arco iris sobre su cabeza; y su rostro era como el sol, y sus pies como columnas de fuego.

Mateo 28:2-3 (RVR 1960)

Y hubo un gran terremoto; porque un ángel del Señor, descendiendo del cielo y llegando, removió la piedra, y se sentó sobre ella. Su aspecto era como un relámpago, y su vestido blanco como la nieve.

Los ángeles son seres espirituales creados por Dios con el fin de glorificarlo a Él. La Biblia enseña que los ángeles han sido dedicados al servicio divino y enviados a la tierra para operar a favor de nosotros, los herederos de la salvación. De acá viene el concepto del “ángel de la guarda” que es en mi opinión, una verdad mal aplicada.

Hebreos 1:14 (NVI)

¿No son todos los ángeles espíritus dedicados al servicio divino, enviados para ayudar a los que han de heredar la salvación?

Basados en esta errónea creencia de que todos tenemos un “ángel de la guarda”, y que debemos hacerle una oración modelo para que nos proteja, es que muchas personas en las iglesias oran a los ángeles, piden a los ángeles y dan órdenes a los ángeles. Todo lo anterior es un error; veamos la explicación bíblica:

La realidad es que los ángeles sí son nuestros escoltas protectores, pero obedecen a su jefe supremo, que es Dios mismo. Ni siquiera Jesús, estando en la posición de hombre les dio órdenes a los ángeles. ¿Qué nos hace a nosotros mejores que Jesús mismo? Nota en el pasaje a continuación cuando Jesús fue arrestado; su expresión claramente demuestra que nosotros debemos orar, acudir, o clamar a Dios Padre y no a los ángeles directamente.

Mateo 26:53 (NVI)

¿Crees que no puedo acudir a mi Padre, y al instante pondría a mi disposición más de doce batallones de ángeles?

Ningún modelo en la Biblia valida la oración o la adoración a los ángeles. Vemos muchas veces que los hombres hablaron con ángeles, especialmente en el Antiguo Testamento; pero solamente había esa interacción cuando los ángeles mensajeros eran enviados por Dios. Además, cuando a Jesús, nuestro máximo ejemplo de vida, sus discípulos le pidieron que les enseñara a orar, Él indicó que nuestra oración debe ir dirigida a Dios Padre.

Mateo 6:9 (RVR 1960)

Vosotros, pues, oraréis así: Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, santificado sea tu nombre.

En el pasaje que sigue, vemos que la reacción de Juan cuando vio al ángel fue postrarse y adorarlo, pero el ángel inmediatamente se lo impidió. Si un ángel te permite adorarlo, debe ser un ángel caído (de los ángeles caídos hablaré más adelante en otra reflexión).

Apocalipsis 19:9-10 (RVR 1960)

Y el ángel me dijo: Escribe: Bienaventurados los que son llamados a la cena de las bodas del Cordero. Y me dijo: Estas son palabras verdaderas de Dios. Yo me postré a sus pies para adorarle. Y él me dijo: Mira, no lo hagas; yo soy consiervo tuyo, y de tus hermanos que retienen el testimonio de Jesús. Adora a Dios; porque el testimonio de Jesús es el espíritu de la profecía.

Para cerrar, como lo prometí en la reflexión anterior, veamos las funciones de los ángeles enviados a nuestro favor. Si te interesa este tema, te invito a tomar tiempo para leer las citas bíblicas de referencia.

Ministran a los creyentes en Cristo. (Hebreos 1:14)
Protegen nuestras vidas, nos guian y nos dirigen (Mateo 26:53; Salmos 91:11-12; Hechos 27:23, 1 Reyes 19:5-8)
Pelean por nosotros. (2 Reyes 6:15-17)
Dirigen, dan instrucciones, alertan y traen mensajes de parte de Dios. (Hechos 8:26, 10:3-6; Mateo 1:20, 2:13; Lucas. 1:19)
La ley fue dada por medio de ángeles. (Hebreos 2:2; Gálatas3:19; Hechos 7:53)
Traen libertad. (Hechos 5:19, 12:8-11; Daniel. 6:22)
Vendrán de nuevo con Jesús a juzgar a las naciones: (Mateo 25:31; 2 Tesalonicenses 1:7-8; Mateo 13:24-42)
Cuando los creyentes mueren, los ángeles los llevan a la presencia de Dios. (Lucas 16:22)
Juntarán a los escogidos desde todos los rincones de la tierra cuando Jesús regrese. (Mateo 24:31)

Recuerda, aunque los ángeles son seres gloriosos, ellos están llamados a rendirle adoración a Jesús, no a quitarle la gloria al Hijo de Dios.

Hebreos 1:6 (RVR 1960)

Otra vez, cuando introduce al Primogénito en el mundo, dice: Adórenle todos los ángeles de Dios.

Angels are glorious and majestic beings. This is why the natural, but incorrect, tendency of man has been to worship them.

Revelation 10:1 (NKJV)

I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. 2 He had a little book open in his hand. And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land.

Mathew 28:2-3 (NKJV)

And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow.

Angels are spiritual beings created by God to glorify Him. The Bible teaches that angels have been dedicated to God's service and sent to earth to operate for us, the heirs of salvation. This originated the concept of "guardian angel" which, in my opinion, is a misapplied truth.

Hebrews 1:14 (NIV)

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Based on this erroneous belief that everyone has a "guardian angel" and that we should pray a model prayer for him to protect us, many people in churches today pray to angels, ask them for things, and give them orders. All this is biblically wrong; allow me to explain:

The reality is that angels are our protective bodyguards, but they only obey their supreme boss, God. Not even Jesus, being in the position of man gave orders to the angels. What makes us better than Jesus himself? Note the following passage when Jesus was arrested; his expression clearly shows that we must pray, call on, or call out to God the Father and not to angels directly.

Mathew 26:53 (NIV)

Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

No model in the Bible validates prayer or worship to angels. We often see men talking to angels, especially in the Old Testament, but this interaction only happened when the messengers were angels sent by God. When Jesus, our ultimate example of life, was asked by his disciples to teach them how to pray, He said our prayers should be directed to God the Father.

Mathew 6:9 (NKJV)

I n this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

In the passage bellow, we see that John's reaction when he saw the angel was to prostrate and worship, but the angel stopped him immediately. If an angel allows you to worship him, then he might be a fallen angel (of fallen angels I will speak later in another meditation).

Revelation 19:9-10 (NKJV)

Then he said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God.” And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

To close, as I promised in the previous reflection, let us see the roles of the angels sent to serve us. If you are interested in this topic, I invite you to take time to read each biblical reference.

They minister to believers in Christ. (Hebrews 1:14)
They protect our lives, guide and direct us. (Matthew 26:53; Psalm 91:11-12, Acts 27:23, 1 Kings 19:5-8)
They fight for us. (2 Kings 6:15-17)
They direct, instruct, warn and bring messages from God. (Acts 8:26, 10:3-6; Matthew 1:20, 2:13; Luke 1:19.)
The law was given by angels. (Hebrews 2:2; Galatians 3:19; Acts 7:53)
They bring freedom. (Acts 5:19, 12: 8-11; Daniel 6:22)
They will come with Jesus when he comes again to judge the nations (Matthew 25:31; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8; Matthew 13:24-42)
When believers die, angels carry them to the presence of God. (Luke 16:22)
They will gather together the elect from all corners of the earth when Jesus returns. (Matthew 24:31)
