El Señor es mi pastor (The Lord is my shepherd)

La serie que hoy empiezo a escribir, y que estará compuesta por al menos 10 reflexiones ha sido motivada por una corta pero poderosa reflexión que recibí en la mañana de hoy, de parte de mi amigo y compañero de batalla - Pr. Mauricio Meléndez; como todas las reflexiones que he escrito, la serie está fundamentada en la Palabra de Dios.

El Salmo 23 es tal vez uno de los fragmentos bíblicos más conocidos por creyentes y no creyentes. Encontramos, todo tipo de material creado al rededor de este pasaje (camisetas, palabritas, afiches, pocillos, etc...) y se han creado miles de predicaciones al rededor del mismo. Aún así, he querido desarrollar esta serie titulada "Estudiando el Salmo 23" para que quienes hacemos parte de blogdefe.com, podamos derivar el mayor beneficio posible de este pasaje para nuestras vidas. En ocasiones saber las cosas de memoria puede ser enemigo de entenderlas, vivirlas y aplicarlas.

Usaré la Nueva Traducción Viviente pues esto nos ayudará a romper un poco el esquema mental que produce repetir de memoria siempre la misma versión.

Salmo 23:1a (NTV)

El Señor es mi pastor.

Esta importante declaración nos habla de una RELACIÓN personal entre Dios y nosotros. El rey David, quien escribió la mayoría de los Salmos, nos revela el fundamento de la vida Cristiana en esta corta frase. EL SEÑOR ES MI PASTOR. Un pastor, es alguien que se relaciona de manera íntima con su rebaño. La función pastoral, implica una relación íntima entre la oveja (animal típicamente usado para referirse a los creyentes) y el pastor. Hay varias cosas que suceden entre la relación Oveja-Pastor, y esta relación es la base de todos los aspectos que estudiaremos en las siguientes reflexiones. Sin embargo, para el caso del verso de hoy quiero resaltar algunas de ellas:

Cercanía: El pastor, vive en función de cuidar a sus ovejas. Pasa tiempo con ellas, las conoce y las diferencia, conoce sus debilidades y dedica tiempo a ellas. De la misma manera, Dios hace con nosotros. Él nos conoce, y vive pendiente de nuestras vidas.

Dependencia: La oveja es un animal totalmente dependiente de su pastor. No puede valerse por sí misma. Es un animal frágil aunque no lo parezca. Así mismo nosotros, aunque queramos vivir engañados pensando que somos independientes y capaces, somos totalmente dependientes de Dios. Jesús dijo en Juan 15:5: "porque, separados de mí, no pueden hacer nada".

Confianza: La oveja vive tranquila porque sabe que su pastor está siempre allí para proveerle, protegerle y levantarle. Es interesante que las ovejas no tienen la capacidad de saltar a los brazos de su pastor. Es el pastor quien debe agacharse y levantar a la oveja para cargarla. Esto habla del amor de Dios quien nos amó a nosotros primero (1 Juan 4:10). La relación que debemos tener con Dios es una relación de confianza absoluta en Él, sabiendo que nada podemos hacer sin su apoyo.

Obediencia: Las ovejas obedecen a su pastor. No a cualquier pastor, a "su" pastor. Ellas reconocen su voz y le obedecen. Jesús dijo: "Mis ovejas oyen mi voz, y yo las conozco, y me siguen" Juan 10:27. Solamente aquel que invierte tiempo en escuchar a Dios, puede obedecerlo.

Amor: Un pastor ama a sus ovejas y las protege hasta el punto de poner su vida en peligro por ellas. De hecho Jesús dijo que Él es el buen pastor quien su vida da por sus ovejas (Juan 10:11). Un pastor que ve su función como un trabajo y no lo hace por amor, jamás dará su vida por las ovejas.

Sobra decirte que nuestro Pastor es Jesús. Es por esto que aunque hay hombres con llamado pastoral, tu Buen Pastor es el Señor Jesucristo. Es a Él a quien debes acudir y en quien debes confiar plenamente.

Cultiva una relación con Dios a través de Jesús para que puedas decir como el salmista "El Señor es mi pastor".

The Lord is my shepherd

The series I'm starting today, will consist of at least 10 meditations. It has been motivated by a short but powerful reflection I received this morning, from my friend and Kingdom partner - Pastor Mauricio Melendez; like all the reflections I have written, the series is based on the Word of God.

Psalm 23 is perhaps one of the best known biblical passages by believers and nonbelievers. We find all kinds of material created around this passage (shirts, merchandising, posters, cups, etc...) and I think thousands of sermons have been preached around it. Still, I want to develop this series entitled "Studying Psalm 23" so those who are part of blogdefe.com, can derive the greatest benefit from this passage into our lives. Sometimes things you know by heart can be an enemy for truly understanding, living, and applying them.

I'll use the New Living Translation as this will help us break the mindset that produces knowing by heart a verse in the same version.

Psalm 23:1a (NLT)

The Lord is my shepherd.

This important statement speaks of a personal RELATIONSHIP between God and us. King David, who wrote most of the Psalms, reveals the foundation of Christian life in this short sentence. THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD. A shepherd is someone who is related intimately with his flock. The pastoral function implies an intimate relationship between the sheep (animal typically used to refer to believers in the Bible) and the pastor. There are several things that happen between the Sheep-Shepherd relationship, and this relationship is the basis of all aspects that we will study in the coming reflections. However, in the case of today's verse, I want to highlight some of them:

Proximity: The pastor, is permanently caring for his sheep. He spends time with them, he knows and differentiates each one, knows their weaknesses and spends time with them. In the same way, God does it with us; He knows us, and is always caring for our lives.

Dependency: A sheep is totally dependent on its shepherd. It cannot take care for itself. It is a fragile animal even if it does not look like that. Likewise humans, even if we want to live deceived into thinking that we are independent and capable, we are totally dependent on God. Jesus said in John 15:5, "because, apart from me you can do nothing".

Trust: Sheep live peacefully because they know their pastor is always for them to provide, protect and lift them up. It is interesting that sheep do not have the ability to jump into the arms of their pastor. It is the shepherd who must bend down and lift the sheep and carry them. This speaks of the love of God whom loved us first (1 John 4:10). The relationship we have with God is a relationship of absolute trust in Him, knowing that we can do nothing without His support.

Obedience: Sheep obey their pastor. Not any pastor, but "their" pastor. They recognize his voice and obey him. Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me" John 10:27. Only he who spends time listening to God, can obey His voice.

Love: A shepherd loves his sheep and protects them to the point of putting his life in danger for them. In fact Jesus says He is the good shepherd who gives His life for the sheep (John 10:11). A pastor who sees his role as a job and does not do it from love, will never give his life for the sheep.

Needless to say that our Shepherd is Jesus. That is why although there are men with a pastoral calling, your Good Shepherd is the Lord Jesus Christ. It is tHim whom you must seek and trust.

Cultivate a relationship with God through Jesus so you can say like the Psalmist, "The Lord is my shepherd".
