La religión pura y verdadera (Pure and genuine religion)

Hoy en día, la palabra religión es utilizada para referirse a una persona espiritual que tiene una creencia religiosa, con normas de comportamiento específicas y que practica ritos o costumbres de oración o sacrificio para ser aceptable ante su dios o sus dioses con el fin de establecer una relación. Las religiones en general, presentan pautas, normas y leyes que deben cumplirse para ser aprobados por un ser superior y recibir unos beneficios de su parte.

Cuando alguien me pregunta por mi religión, mi respuesta siempre es la misma: “NINGUNA”.

La palabra religión aparece solamente cuatro veces en el Nuevo Testamento cristiano y no aparece ni una sola vez en el Antiguo Testamento. Así mismo las cuatro veces que la palabra religión es mencionada en la Biblia, solamente una vez aparece en un sentido positivo.

La religión pura y verdadera a los ojos de Dios Padre consiste en ocuparse de los huérfanos y de las viudas en sus aflicciones, y no dejar que el mundo te corrompa.

En la Biblia, según el diccionario girego Lexicon, la palabra religión encuentra su raíz etimológica en el griego “dsreskeía” y quiere decir específicamente adoración externa que consiste en ceremonias y disciplinas de observación de normas. Como ya lo mencionamos, esta palabra aparece tan solo cuatro veces en el canon bíblico.

Es interesante ver que la religión pura y verdadera a los ojos de Dios, consiste en tres cosas. Cuidar de las aflicciones de los huérfanos, las viudas y no permitir que el mundo corrompa nuestras vidas. Todo lo demás es invento de hombres.

Aunque está claro que la fe en Jesús consiste en entender que Dios es quien se acerca al hombre por amor, y no el hombre llegando a Dios por medio de sus esfuerzos; me llama mucho la atención que la única definición bíblica de “religión” sea esa. ¡Cuán lejos están la mayoría de las mal llamadas religiones, de la verdadera definición de religión!

Aunque Jesús nunca uso la palabra religión, cuando los fariseos (religiosos de la época), le preguntaron ¿Cuál es el mandamiento más importante? Su respuesta fue contundente: EL AMOR.

Maestro, ¿cuál es el mandamiento más importante en la ley de Moisés? Jesús contestó: “Ama al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente”. Este es el primer mandamiento y el más importante. Hay un segundo mandamiento que es igualmente importante: “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo”. Toda la ley y las exigencias de los profetas se basan en estos dos mandamientos.

Si tu vida de fe no se caracteriza por el amor, estás viviendo en un engaño, en una religión sin sentido. Y si en el lugar donde te reúnes, o te congregas para nutrir tu fe, no predican y viven el amor de Dios hacia los más necesitados, estás siendo guiado por hombres ciegos espiritualmente hablando.

Dejadlos; son ciegos guías de ciegos; y si el ciego guiare al ciego, ambos caerán en el hoyo.

El mundo necesita más amor y menos religión.

Pure and genuine religion

Today, the word religion is used to refer to a spiritual person who has a religious belief, with specific rules of behavior and practicing rites or customs of prayer and sacrifice to be acceptable to their god or gods in order to establish a relationship with them. Religions generally have guidelines, rules and laws that must be met to be approved by a superior being and receive a reward from him.

When someone asks me about my religion, my answer is always the same: "NONE".

The word religion appears only four times in the Christian New Testament and not once in the Old Testament. Regarding the four times that the word religion is mentioned in the Bible, only one time it appears in a positive sense.

James 1:27 (NLT)

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

In the Bible, according to Lexicon Greek dictionary, the word religion finds its etymological roots in the Greek "thrēskeia" and specifically means external worshipping through ceremonial observance. As already mentioned, this word appears only four times in the biblical canon.

Interestingly, pure and true religion in the eyes of God consists of three things. Caring for the troubles of orphans and widows and not allowing the world to corrupt our lives. Everything else different from this is an invention of man.

Though clearly faith in Jesus is God drawing near to man by love, and not man trying to draw near to God through his efforts, It gets my attention to see that the only biblical definition of "religion" is the one we saw earlier. How far are most so called religions, to the genuine definition of what religion is!

Although Jesus never used the word religion, when the Pharisees (religious people of the time), asked Him what was the greatest commandment? His answer was absolutely clear: LOVE.

“Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

If your life of faith is not characterized by love, you are living in a delusion, a religion with no sense. And if the place where you meet or you congregate to grow in your faith does not preach and live God’s love to the needy, you are being guided by spiritually blind men.

Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.”

The world needs more love and less religion.
